Apply for Medicare

Step 1: Prepare Before You Apply

  • Make sure you meet eligibility:

    • Age 65 or older

    • OR qualify due to disability or medical condition (like ESRD or ALS)

  • Gather needed documents:

    • Your Social Security number

    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status

    • Work history (if applying for premium-free Part A)

Step 2: Go to the Official Website

  • Visit: www.ssa.gov/medicare

  • Click the button that says “Apply for Medicare Only” (if you don’t want to apply for full Social Security retirement benefits yet).

Step 3: Start the Application

  • Click “Start a New Application”.

  • Create or sign into your mySocialSecurity account.

    • If you don’t have one yet, click “Create an Account” and follow the prompts (you'll need to verify your identity).

Step 4: Complete the Online Form

  • Fill in your personal information:

    • Name, date of birth, Social Security number, contact information

  • Answer questions about:

    • Your current health insurance (if you have any)

    • Employment status (important if delaying Part B)

  • Choose whether you want to enroll in:

    • Part A (Hospital Insurance)

    • Part B (Medical Insurance)

Important:

  • If you are still working and have employer coverage, you may choose to delay Part B to avoid paying unnecessary premiums.

Step 5: Review and Submit

  • Double-check all your information for accuracy.

  • Submit your application.

  • Save or print your confirmation page for your records.

Step 6: Wait for Your Medicare Card

  • SSA will process your application and mail you a Medicare card.

  • You typically receive your card within 2–4 weeks.

  • Your coverage will start based on your eligibility month.

  • Apply early: You can apply up to 3 months before your 65th birthday.

  • Missed your Initial Enrollment Period? You may need to apply during the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31).
