New to Medicare? Here's What You Need to Know

Medicare is the federal health insurance program designed to provide coverage for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It's made up of different parts that cover specific healthcare services — Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance), Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage), and Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) that bundle options together.

How Medicare is Funded

If you or your spouse have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters of work credits), you typically qualify for premium-free Part A coverage. This means you don't pay a monthly premium for hospital insurance.

  • Part B (which covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services) still requires a monthly premium.

  • Medicare is primarily funded by payroll taxes (FICA), premiums from beneficiaries, and general revenue from the U.S. Treasury.

How We Help You Through the Process

Navigating Medicare enrollment can feel overwhelming — but that's where we step in.
At Medicare One Stop, we personally guide you through:

✅ Setting up your Social Security account if needed
✅
Applying for Medicare Part A and Part B through SSA.gov
✅ Deciding whether to add Part D prescription coverage
✅
Comparing Supplement (Medigap) and Advantage Plans side-by-side
✅ Timing your application to avoid Late Enrollment Penalties (LEPs)

We simplify each step, making sure you don't miss key deadlines that could cost you later.

Avoiding Late Enrollment Penalties

Timing is critical with Medicare.

  • If you don't enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), you could face lifetime penalties on your Part B and Part D premiums.

  • We help you plan enrollment based on your work history and insurance status to avoid unnecessary penalties.

  • If you're still working past 65 and have employer health coverage, we’ll show you exactly when and how to submit the right forms (CMS-L564) to ensure penalty-free enrollment later.
